DERMOSOFT
Blue healing ointment for dermatophilosis, scratches (pastern dermatitis), and superficial injuries during muddy and wet conditions.
Dermatophilosis, scratches, or superficial wounds are unpleasant conditions that can cause irritation and pain in horses and usually appear as scabs on the legs. Inflammatory irritation and scab formation often occur in areas most exposed to moisture, rain, and mud.
Dermosoft is a blue cream made from plant extracts and zinc oxide, known for their ability to help heal the skin and create a protective barrier. The cream has a thick texture that ensures excellent adhesion to both skin and hair while providing effective coverage.
Dermatophilosis is commonly described as a painful bacterial skin infection accompanied by scab formation, sometimes resembling phlegmon or fungal infections. It appears mainly as scabs on the legs and is caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis. These bacteria normally live in soil but, during wet and cold autumn weather, they can be transferred to the horse’s skin through mud. When the skin barrier is damaged, the bacteria penetrate the lower parts of the limbs (heels, pasterns, fetlock joints), multiply, and damage surrounding tissue. The horse’s body reacts with inflammation; the affected area becomes congested, swollen, and wound exudate appears on the surface and dries into scabs. Beneath these scabs, multiplying bacteria and white blood cells produce pus. When a mature scab falls off, new bacteria are released into the environment and remain dormant until moisture and suitable temperatures allow them to become active again.
Directions for Use
Before the first application, clean cracks and scabs with a mild soap and dry thoroughly. Apply DERMOSOFT twice daily. Cover the treated area with gauze and a bandage and leave for 12 hours. Repeat the application of DERMOSOFT with gauze and bandaging every 12 hours. Continue treatment in the same way on the following days until full recovery.
Try to keep the horse’s legs as clean and dry as possible and avoid working in muddy areas. Use a very clean, soft brush to remove any dirt that may settle on the wounds.
